It is common to think that cigarette butts are biodegradable because the filters are made of cotton, but that could not be further from the truth. In fact, cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate, a type of PLASTIC than can take up to 13 years to degrade in nature.
ANIMALS MISTAKE CIGARETTE BUTTS FOR FOOD
Cigarette butts are a risk factor for several species of animals because they look similar to their food. Traces of cigarette butts have been found in the stomachs of several species of birds, whales, turtles and fish.
POLLUTE SOILS AND WATER RESERVES
When a cigarette butt is thrown on the ground, more than 4000 toxic chemicals are introduced into the environment. These toxins can contaminate the soil after being leached by rainwater and be carried into rivers and oceans.
CAUSE FIRES
Each year, fires devastate extensive forest areas, destroying plants that take years to develop, and can result in the loss of human lives.
ARE DANGEROUS TO CHILDREN
It is difficult to find cities streets that do not have cigarette butts on the ground, which leads to the expense of valuable resources for cleaning. More importantly, cigarette butts pose a high risk to children because of their toxicity, whose curiosity leads them to move or even ingest them.
